Científicos del Instituto de Investigación Sir John Walsh de la Universidad de Otago (Nueva Zelanda) han descubierto que respirar por la boca mientras dormimos aumenta las probabilidades de sufrir caries.

Sobre la investigación
La hipótesis de partida era: conocer cómo influye la respiración en la salud bucodental. Para realizar las averiguaciones, los investigadores han contado con diez voluntarios sanos.
A todos ellos se les midió el pH en saliva durante cuatro días, tiempo que duró el experimento. Tras anotar las cantidades, los expertos colocaron de forma aleatoria una pinza en la nariz de cinco pacientes, para obligarles a respirar por la boca.
Resultados
Los investigadores han descubierto al analizar los datos que los participantes que expulsaban el aire por la boca tenían un promedio más alto (6.6) de pH oral, considerado ácido.
«El pH intraoral disminuyó lentamente durante las horas de sueño en todos los participantes, pero mostró mayores caídas durante un período de tiempo más largo cuando se obligó a los participantes a respirar por la boca», ha señalado la principal autora del estudio, Joanne Choi, en declaraciones al medio norteamericano Tech Times.
El equipo de Choi ha observado que estos valores descendieron hasta un 3,6. Un grado muy inferior al mínimo recomendado, 5.5, a partir de ese número el diente comienza a perder sus minerales.
Conclusiones
Los resultados del estudio tienen un razonamiento lógico. «Las bacterias productoras de ácido prosperan en ausencia de saliva y se descompone en los dientes, causando caries e irritando los tejidos blandos de la cavidad bucal”, ha explicado el dentista de la Universidad de Buffalo, Hargun K. Singh, en declaraciones al medio norteamericano Medical Daily.
Expulsar el aire por la boca durante la noche es incontrolable, pero si se puede evitar hacerlo por el día. De hecho, respirar por la nariz es lo más recomendable para que los dientes no se resientan con el frío.
