El 85% de los casos diagnosticados en España se producen de manera tardía, según el Consejo General de Dentistas. Una mala noticia porque la detección precoz del cáncer oral puede salvarte la vida.
El año pasado se registraron 5.000 nuevos casos de este tumor que afecta mayoritariamente a los hombres. Una patología que ha dejado de ser una enfermedad de ancianos, cada vez más menores de 40 años la sufren.
Síntomas
El interior de las mejillas, los labios, la lengua, el paladar y las encías pueden albergar alguna señal. “Una llaga en la boca que no se cura, dolor en la boca que no desaparece, un bulto o engrosamiento en la mejilla, un área blanca o roja sobre las encías, mal aliento, sensación de que hay algo atascado en la garganta y dificultad para masticar, tragar o mover la mandíbula o la lengua son los síntomas más frecuentes”, ha señalado la odontóloga Elena Criado.
Todos estos indicios pueden ayudar a una detección precoz del carcinoma que mejore el resultado del tratamiento. “Según datos publicados en la American Society of Clinical Oncology entre los casos diagnosticados, el índice de supervivencia a los 5 años es aproximadamente del 63%, pero si el cáncer se diagnostica en estadio temprano, la tasa de supervivencia a 5 años es del 83%”, ha apuntado Criado.

El consumo de tabaco y alcohol son junto a la mala higiene dental los principales factores de riesgo. El cáncer oral también se asocia a infecciones por virus o prótesis mal ajustadas que rocen continuamente la mucosa.
