Científicos de la Universidad de Würzburg (Alemania) han desarrollado una goma de mascar que permite detectar posibles enfermedades dentales.
El funcionamiento es sencillo. El consumidor se introduce la golosina en la boca y en cinco minutos obtiene el diagnóstico. Esto se debe a que el chicle actúa como un biosensor que se activa al entrar en contacto con la saliva.
Una vez mezclado, el paciente puede experimentar dos sensaciones; que el sabor permanezca sin cambios o se vuelva amargo. En el primer caso, el examen revela que todo está bien. Sin embargo, el individuo que perciba la segunda opción podría sufrir una infección o enfermedad en su salud dental.
El objetivo de esta “gran herramienta de detección” ideada por una compañía farmacéutica es que “cualquier persona, en cualquier lugar y a cualquier momento” pueda descubrir sus problemas bucodentales, según ha afirmado uno de los investigadores que ha desarrollado el producto, Lorenz Meinel.
El estudio se centrará ahora en comprobar si el denatonio –compuesto químico del chicle– actúa de forma correcta. Para ello, se realizará un ensayo clínico más amplio en Italia. De este modo, la comercialización del primer test de prevención casero no llegaría hasta pasados dos o tres años del análisis de los resultados, según han avanzado sus creadores en la revista Nature Communications.
Un aliado del dentista
En ningún caso se pretende que este invento sustituya al dentista. Ambos pueden y deben coexistir. Y se espera que su aportación sea la de una herramienta aliada y sólida que ayude a prevenir y mejorar los diagnósticos, según ha declarado Meinel.
Su razonamiento se ha basado en los datos extraídos en la investigación: cerca del 20% de los adultos de mediana edad padece enfermedades en las encías (especialmente los individuos con implantes) y no son conscientes de ellas. Ahora, la ciencia pretende que las personas sin dolores conozcan si están sanos o no.
