La Sociedad Española de Ortodoncia (SEDO) aconseja retirarlo antes de los 24 meses. Pasado este este período, los niños corren el riesgo de sufrir malformaciones bucodentales. Desde la institución también señalan que el uso del chupete debe prevalecer por delante del pulgar. El motivo es ayudar a estimular la succión en los pequeños.
«El chupete ayuda a los bebés a conciliar el sueño y a calmarse cuando lloran, reduce la incidencia de la muerte súbita y es menos perjudicial que el hábito de chuparse el dedo, o incluso la mano», explica el presidente de la SEDO, Juan Carlos Pérez Varela.
Paladares ojivales o mordidas abiertas
La prevalencia del uso de esta pieza de goma más allá de los dos años puede ocasionar alteraciones en la boca del niño. Los paladares ojivales y las mordidas abiertas son las más frecuentes. La primera patología provoca un estrechamiento en la parte superior de la boca. Y entre sus consecuencias se encuentran la mordida cruzada, los dientes torcidos y el apiñamiento de las piezas. La segunda es una maloclusión que se produce cuando los caninos chocan entre sí y ambas filas de dientes no se cierran correctamente. Ambas deformaciones se pueden corregir, aunque no será necesario hacerlo si se retira el chupete a tiempo.
