Investigadores de American Cancer Society han observado durante 15 años la evolución de las encías de más de 7.000 pacientes. Los resultados de su exploración han demostrado que las posibilidades de padecer cáncer de pulmón se duplican con una mala salud bucodental.

La primera labor de los científicos fue analizar los exámenes dentales de los participantes. Tras realizar este trabajo, agruparon cada caso en función del sexo, edad, peso y consumo de alcohol y tabaco. Dos tareas fundamentales para obtener unos resultados más fiables.
Con la hipótesis establecida y el trabajo de campo realizado, los expertos comenzaron la investigación. Una vez concluidos los tres lustros de observación y tras analizar los datos cosechados, evidenciaron que existía una relación directa.
Los sujetos que sufrían una enfermedad grave en las encías tenían una probabilidad más alta de padecer cáncer de pulmón. Además, esta afección también se asoció a una posibilidad superior de sufrir un tumor colorrectal.
Este no fue el único descubrimiento de los expertos. Los pacientes con algún tipo de alteración en las encías tenían un riesgo 24% superior de desarrollar cualquier tipo de cefaloma.
Conclusiones
“El estudio no puede probar que una enfermedad en las encías acabe desarrollando cáncer, pero sí es cierto que se ha observado esta tendencia entre los pacientes que tenían una mala higiene bucodental, que eran la mayoría de los sujetos que tenían más de 30 años”, ha manifestado Leonard Lichtenfeld, uno de los autores del estudio.
Este hallazgo vuelve a poner de manifiesto la importancia de mantener una correcta higiene dental. Las bacterias que se acumulan en la boca son la vía de entrada de afecciones más graves. Y como demuestra el estudio, las posibilidades de padecer cáncer de pulmón se duplican con una mala salud bucodental.
