Prevenir las lesiones fúngicas. Con este objetivo, un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de Buffalo (Estados Unidos) ha diseñado una prótesis 3D. Una dentadura postiza que evita infecciones gracias a unas cápsulas microscópicas que liberan medicamentos.
Sobre el estudio
Los investigadores comenzaron comprobando la resistencia del material impreso. Para ello, introdujeron la prótesis en una máquina que puso a prueba la flexibilidad. Este mecanismo permitió averiguar los puntos de ruptura.
Los científicos descubrieron en el examen que las dentaduras tridimensionales eran un 35% más endebles que las convencionales, a pesar de utilizar el mismo compuesto, la acrilamida.
Son estas fracturas las que causan inflamaciones, enrojecimientos e hinchazones en la boca. Tres lesiones que pueden derivar en infecciones. Una complicación que los expertos querían resolver. Para combatir este problema, optaron por introducir medicamentos antifúngicos en microesferas permeables y biodegradables.
Con la hipótesis establecida, los científicos probaron con una, cinco y diez capas de este material. Los resultados reflejaron que la liberación del fármaco y la reducción fúngica tuvo más éxito con la capa única.
Un gran avance
Este gran avance médico permitirá a los especialistas individualizar en cada caso y acabar con un problema que afecta a casi dos tercios de los pacientes con dentadura en Estados Unidos: los hongos.
Gracias a este progreso científico, los médicos podrán crear prótesis personalizadas en pocos minutos. «El mayor impacto de este innovador sistema de impresión 3D es su impacto potencial en el ahorro de tiempo y costo«, ha asegurado el principal autor del estudio, Praveen Arany.
Asimismo, la aplicación de este novedoso sistema, publicado en Materials Today Communications, también podrá realizarse en otras terapias como las férulas, los estents o los yesos.
